"Better Be Home Soon" failed to chart in the UK and stalled at USA #40 but it peaked at 2 in Australia (& New Zealand), but was among Australia's 1988's national top ten best sellers but it was stuck behind Fairground Attraction - Perfect Fairground Attraction - Perfect (which also topped the charts in the UK & Ireland). This struck a chord with the former Split Enz member, and was the inspiration for the song about missing someone whilst they were away, and hoping they would return safely. When he fought in the First World War, and later on his mountaineering expeditions, his wife would always write to him, and finish it with the message "Be Home Soon". It was there he met his wife Ruth Turner. Mallory studied at Cambridge University, and later became a lecturer at Charterhouse, one of England's great public schools. The pair were last seen when they were about 800 vertical feet (245 m) from the summit. Their leading mountaineer was the charismatic George Mallory, whom alongside his climbing partner, Andrew "Sandy" Irvine, disappeared on the north-east ridge during their attempt to make the first ascent of the world's highest mountain in 1924.
